Suicide Postvention: Supporting Complex Loss

The grief that follows a loss by suicide is uniquely complex. It often carries a weight of unspoken questions, isolation, and a distinct form of trauma that standard bereavement support may not fully reach.

Postvention is the specialised support, care, and psychoeducation provided to individuals and professionals navigating this specific landscape. It is not about finding quick answers; it is about providing a safe, consistent, and deeply compassionate space to process a profound and often life-altering loss.

My Approach to Postvention

As a BACP Accredited Counsellor with more than a decade of clinical experience, my work focuses on holding a safe, consistent space for those affected by suicide and client loss. I aim to help navigate the intense, fluctuating terrain of traumatic grief without judgment or pressure.

I provide support tailored to:
  • Individuals: Navigating the personal, confusing, and often exhausting aftermath of a suicide loss.
  • Mental health professionals: Supporting therapists, counsellors, and supervisors who are processing the unique impact, isolation, and unexpressed grief of a client's death or suicide within their practice.

Confidential Grief: A Resource for the Profession

"Client death, coupled with the necessary confidentiality of the counselling relationship, can leave therapists feeling isolated, blamed, and crushingly unsupported."

To support practitioners through these tragic experiences, I authored Confidential Grief: A therapist's guide to client suicide, death, and the impact on practice.

Client death - whether by suicide, illness, or occurring unexpectedly - is a real part of clinical work, yet it is rarely addressed in a sustained or practical way within standard training or supervision. This book is written from within clinical practice to offer support, comfort, and courage to counsellors, psychotherapists, and supervisors navigating the aftermath of a loss. It provides a grounded framework for managing immediate clinical and ethical responsibilities, while offering much-needed language to process the profound emotional impact on the therapist and their ongoing work.

Professional Collaboration & Teaching

Alongside my individual clinical focus, I am deeply committed to the wider development of postvention awareness, teaching, and mental health writing across the UK and Europe.

If you represent an organisation, training body, or clinical network looking to consider postvention initiatives, offer specialised workshops, or host training regarding the impact of client loss on practice, I would welcome the opportunity to connect.
